The prolonged pandemic offered our Early Scholars debaters an opportunity to compete at the University of Kentucky Season Opener; a tournament that was previously a logistical challenge to attend. With the new online format, our debaters were able to compete with contenders from across the United States from the safety and comfort of their homes. Due to the ongoing pandemic, there has never been a better time to debate the resolution “The United States federal government should enact the Medicare-For-All Act of 2019.” Students approached the resolution with enthusiasm, diligence and a well-rounded awareness of current events. An attitude that was evident as Zachary and Hillary sustained a preliminary winning record, Thomas and Daniel reached the octofinals and Brandon and Annie, the quarterfinals. We also want to give special applause to Daniel for his outstanding performance which earned him the 12th place speaker award from a group of hundreds of competitors. This tournament served as a remarkable display of students’ flexibility and intellectual prowess during a trying time and serves as a reminder of what can be accomplished with hard work and commitment. All in all, the season opener served as a delightful start to the 2020 Fall Debate season. We can’t wait to see what else our debaters can achieve this season.
